Animals are not Christmas presents, even in 2023!

Every year, pets are given as Christmas presents. Children in particular often have the desire for an animal companion, which unfortunately many parents still give in to. This usually leads to a number of problems.

Before buying an animal, you should find out how to keep it properly. Housing, feeding and behaviour of the animal should be well known, because small animals in particular often do not want to be cuddled and sometimes need expensive fresh food and a large enclosure every day to satisfy their natural needs.

Animals are usually bought in pet shops and given as gifts without this information in mind, but the responsibility lies with the parents, who should find out about possible pets together with their children and take responsibility for the purchase.

It is not uncommon for animals to bite if they are distressed or become ill because they have been fed incorrectly. Then the pet you once wanted so much often becomes a burden and has to go. In the new year, the Christmas presents are then placed in the classified adverts. If that doesn't work, they are handed over to animal shelters or, in the worst case, abandoned.

Animals that remain with their owners often suffer from cages that are too small and sold by pet shops as "perfectly adequate".

Before you acquire an animal, ask yourself the following questions:

- Is every member of the family in agreement?
- Are the time commitment and responsibilities clear?
- Are the follow-up costs acceptable?
- Are there any allergies?
- Are animals allowed in the home and does it have enough space?
Pets are not Christmas presents, they are companions for life!

Pets have a right to a species-appropriate life and a loving owner. Throughout the year, many foster homes are looking for a loving home for unwanted animals.

Adopt, don't shop!
