Plastic running wheels for rodents - light, hygienic & comfortable

Our plastic running wheels offer an ideal solution for dwarf hamsters, white-footed mice and other short-tailed rodents. They are particularly lightweight, dimensionally stable and easy to clean - perfect for keeping rodents hygienic.

For additional comfort, our plastic running wheels can be fitted with replaceable cork inserts. These provide a soft running surface and relieve the sensitive paws of your little pets. The wheels are also height-adjustable, stable and have a closed rear panel to ensure maximum safety.

Please note that for mice, the tail is considered part of the back. Our plastic running wheels are therefore particularly suitable for compact species such as white-footed mice or short-tailed representatives such as red-backed voles. Make sure that your rodents can run in the running wheel with a straight back to promote a healthy posture.

Isn't a plastic wheel dangerous?

Kunstofflaufrad für Zwerghamster

Plastics do not have a good reputation, because cheap plastic can bring unhealthy substances such as phthalates into the enclosure. That's why we took a close look when selecting the material for our running wheels, so that hamsters and co. can run safely. We only use food-safe plastic for our wheels.

Because plastic also has advantages for running wheels:

1. easy cleaning with plastic running wheels

Faeces, urine and scent marks also leave their mark on the running wheels. To ensure that hamsters or mice always run in a clean wheel, you need to clean the wheel regularly. Dirt is easier to remove from the non-porous, smooth surface of the plastic wheel. Simply take a quick shower, leave to soak and then wipe away with a sponge. This is particularly quick and thorough with these wheels. This is particularly advantageous for quarantine enclosures when the wheel needs to be cleaned of endo- or ectoparasites. There are no crevices in which the unwanted lodgers can hide.

2. best hygiene thanks to plastic

Unlike wood, plastic does not absorb liquids. Urine can therefore be removed better and more completely. You can also use mild hygiene cleaners on the plastic surface, which you should wash off completely due to their ingredients.

In addition, the plastic of the wheel does not retain moisture. If you change or clean the cork insert regularly, plastic wheels are much less susceptible to bacterial colonisation.

3. how to avoid odours

Some mice and hamsters have chosen the running wheel as their loo. Wooden wheels can have an unpleasant odour when liquids soak into the material. Plastic running wheels do not have this problem as the plastic does not absorb moisture. So if you have a smelly problem with wooden wheels, a plastic wheel is the solution.

Frequently asked questions about plastic balance bikes
Do I need to clean the wheel before use?

In principle, there is no need to do so. If you still want to do it, the cleaning process is no different from the usual one.

How do you clean a plastic impeller?

It is best to use an unused toothbrush (or one that is only used to clean the wheel) and warm water.

Very important: Do not use any chemical cleaning agents and do not put the wheel in the dishwasher! Try to avoid too much water on the ball bearing.

When do I need to replace the cork running surface?

As soon as the cork tread shows serious damage and starts to fall apart, it must be replaced.

Cork can disintegrate after a while if the rodent scratches or bites it too often or if it is cleaned too often and too roughly. In some cases, however, such as parasite infestation, frequent cleaning is unavoidable and the advantage of being able to simply replace the cork surface is clearly to your advantage!

Do I have to replace the impeller?

Only if it becomes defective.

My rodent nibbles on the wheel, is that dangerous?

For some rodents, nibbling is a characteristic behaviour, so if in doubt, always assess the situation. Degus and hamsters in particular are usually the little culprits that like to take a running wheel completely apart.

If the piece of furniture starts to splinter or a part of it breaks off, it absolutely must be replaced. If the rodent were to swallow something, that would be problematic enough. But he can also injure himself at the breaking points and you certainly want to avoid that!

What is particularly important when buying a wheel?

The running wheel must have a closed rear wall and a closed running surface. There must be no scissor effect when getting in and out and the rodent must be able to stand and walk in it in a posture that is gentle on the spine

There is no such thing as a running wheel that is too big. If in doubt, always choose the larger model!

Do I need to get my rodent particularly used to the wheel?

No. Simply place it in the cage and wait until it accepts it on its own. It won't take long and your little darling will certainly get the hang of how it works.

If you want to know whether he might be scurrying around in the wheel overnight, place some hay or a few leaves or something similar on the top. As soon as the tread is moved, it falls off and you know the next day.

Are plastic wheels quiet?

Yes, but you will, of course, hear the noise when you run.

My wheel squeaks, what's the problem?

Dirt could have got into the wheel bearing. Try rinsing out the wheel. You can also re-oil it; a single drop manoeuvred into the bearing with a small syringe is sufficient. However, only use vegetable oil and never grease! There is too great a risk that your curious rodent will start licking it and poison itself.

We do not recommend unscrewing the wheel yourself!
