Sand baths are a rodent's best friend. Most of the favourite rodents for the home come from deserts or desert-like areas. It is therefore hardly surprising that the little rascals are so fond of sand. Some animal species, such as the Roborowski dwarf hamster or the gerbil, need a lot of sand in their enclosure to make them feel really comfortable. That's why we also offer different sizes to suit the animal. If you already own one of our running wheels, you will have noticed that the sizes are the same. Our sand baths are shaped like our wheel drums. So you can roughly imagine the size. You can also choose whether you would prefer a round or square lid. These lids close off part of the sand bath, but can be removed at any time to provide additional storage space for the exercise wheel or a drinking trough.
Sand baths and grooming
Hamsters, mice, gerbils, degus and chinchillas. What do these animals all have in common, apart from the fact that they are all rodents, you ask? Fur care, of course. It's not called"chinchilla sand" for nothing - because chinchillas are famous for cleaning their fur with fine sand. The animals roll and shake in the sand to clean their skin and fur. It is therefore essential that you provide your pet with a sand bath. We also have the matching sand on offer, which you can have conveniently delivered to your home together with the new sand bath.
Sandbath or digging box, the choice is entirely yours
Of course, the popular Getzoo sand baths can also be used as a digging box. For example, in the run of hamsters, for gerbils with soil or clay or some cork granules for the degus and lots of tasty morsels hidden away? There are no limits to your creativity. Depending on its use, however, the sand bath should be coated with DIN 71-3 clear varnish. It is best to apply 4-5 coats until the sand bath has developed a good lustre. Then you can also use wetter inserts without having to worry about mould or the like. However, we recommend that you only use dry fillings for long-term use.

Tips for the use of sand baths
- Clear coat against urine: if you are using the sand bath for hamsters, degus, gerbils or coloured mice, we recommend that you treat the sand bath with DIN 71-3 clear coat before use. 4-5 coats should be sufficient so that you can wipe the sand bath with a damp cloth when cleaning. This also effectively prevents urine from being directly absorbed.
- Lots of sand for sand lovers: there are animal species, such as the Roborowski dwarf hamster, that want lots of sand, so please use the largest sand bath from our range and provide additional tubs and sand play options.
- Suitable sand for your sand bath: of course we also have the right sand for your sand bath. Take a look at our Getzoo bathing sand.
- The sand can be easily sieved with a fine sieve to remove food residues and other impurities.
Our hamster sand bath is available in four different sizes.
- 21 and 27 cm are suitable for colour mice, golden and dwarf hamsters.
- 30 and 33 cm are suitable for chinchillas, degus, coloured mice, golden and dwarf hamsters and gerbils.
You should base your choice equally on your pet's need to dig or burrow and on the size of the cage. The sand baths are supplied with a lid, so that an additional wheel can be placed on top. However, it is best to leave the lid off for your chinchilla, as it likes to throw itself through the sand to clean itself and this would only be a hindrance.
There are many different reasons for this. Many rodents love to burrow through it and can thus indulge their digging instinct. Sand is also used by many rodents to clean themselves. The animals do not need water for this, as it would only make them sick. Instead, they dig through the sand to remove flakes of skin and the like from their fur.
Rodents also wear down their claws naturally by digging in the sand.
For bathing and cleaning Bathing sand for chinchillas should be used. Alternatively, fine terrarium sand can also be used.
Sandpit sand or similar is too coarse and could lead to injuries. Bird sand usually contains shell grit, which is poisonous to rodents.
It needs to be cleaned regularly. However, it is not necessary to replace all of the sand, it is sufficient to sieve it out. For example, using a fine kitchen sieve, which will only be used for this purpose in future.
The complete replacement of the sand is sufficient once a month.
Small rodents from steppe or desert-like areas need the sandy soil to keep their fur clean and shiny. This applies to chinchillas, hamsters and gerbils, for example.
Thanks to its fine grain and velvety texture, our bathing sand cares for the coat and removes dander, dirt and grease. It also allows natural abrasion of the claws when digging and can thus help to avoid claw cutting.
