Wooden shelves for rodents - more structure & safety in the enclosure
Properly furnishing a rodent enclosure is essential for safety and well-being. Wooden shelves not only provide additional levels for more freedom of movement, but also a stable surface for running wheels, bowls and drinking troughs to prevent burying in litter.
Our Getzoo wooden decks are specially designed for hamsters, mice, chinchillas and gerbils. Thanks to their sturdy wooden feet, they are particularly stable and provide a secure base, even if rodents dig underneath or bump into the shelves.
Complete the enclosure with a high-quality wooden shelf and create a well thought-out, species-appropriate environment that ensures both order and natural behaviour for your rodents.
Getzoo Wooden shelves for rodents
The wooden shelves from Getzoo are ideal for keeping hamsters. A hamster shelf is particularly useful for things like the sand bath, which no hamster enclosure should be without. We also often see our wooden shelves for hamsters being used for running wheels, as the wooden shelves effectively prevent the running wheel from sinking into the bedding. If the hamster has a water bowl, this should ideally also be placed on a shelf for hamsters to prevent litter from constantly ending up in the water bowl.
Levels for gerbils
The same applies to gerbils; gerbils naturally also need tiers. A floor for gerbils is very important, as these small and agile rodents like to scurry through the enclosure, it is of course an advantage to be able to divide the enclosure into several levels. As with hamsters, a floor for gerbils offers enough space for a running wheel, feeding and drinking bowls and other activity toys.
Rodent housing and shelves
Wooden shelves have become indispensable in rodent keeping, as the natural raw material is non-toxic for rodents and is not as cold as glass or ceramic, for example. It is also easy to work with and the wooden shelves for coloured mice and other rodents can be easily extended or repaired. The Getzoo wooden shelves for coloured mice, chinchillas, rats, hamsters and co. are all handmade in Germany. If you have not yet used a floor for keeping rodents, you should do so. Because you should definitely consider the following points:
✔ Wooden shelves have a pleasant temperature for rodents
✔ The shelves for hamsters and co. can be customised as desired using napkin technique and Ponal (non-toxic for rodents)
✔ Perfect for placing the running wheel on a floor and securing water and food bowls
✔ Heavy objects can be protected from burrowing underneath on wooden shelves
✔ Quality guaranteed, no glue residues, splinters or toxic softwoods are used
Secure the shelves well for your pet
Open shelves harbour the problem that the rodent could fall off them. Therefore, make sure that the fall height is as low as possible so that no serious injuries occur. You can also bridges to create a kind of fence.

Additional shelves have many advantages in the rodent cage. As most cages do not offer enough walking space in their dimensions, you can buy shelves for your hamster to solve this problem. This problem does not arise if there is sufficient space to run around or if the floor space is at least one square metre, but even then tiers can be very helpful. For example, by preventing the burrowing rodent from undermining furniture that could then injure it due to its heavy weight.
As soon as shelves fulfil a specific purpose (additional walking space or protection against furniture tipping over), it definitely makes sense to buy shelves for the rodent cage.
There are rodent cages that already have mezzanine floors. They are usually connected with ramps or another passageway. As it is generally not possible to have high bedding on the additional levels and the individual chambers are always exactly the same height, these cages are usually not suitable for species-appropriate housing. The rodent would not be able to dig or burrow deep enough, as its instincts demand. A sand bath will only provide minor relief, as persistent digging in one direction is still not possible.
Firstly: standard cages are not species-appropriate. You should look for other accommodation for your pet as soon as possible, such as a rodentarium. Bars contain a certain amount of mercury, which is toxic to rodents.
Furthermore, the shelves in these cages are not made for rodents' paws. This becomes a particular problem if you choose a mesh cage that is advertised as species-appropriate because it offers plenty of space. The shelves are then usually also made of a grid. The rodent can seriously injure itself if it slips between the bars. Alternative plastic inserts are dangerous because they could break when gnawed.
Again, it all depends on what purpose the tray fulfils. They are great for placing bowls and food toys on, and plants and twigs can also be easily integrated here. An alternative to the running track is the running wheel, but only the floor can be combined with adventure food. Suspension bridges and tunnels also offer climbing and exploration opportunities.
There's a little bit of everything in a species-appropriate rodent cage!
A great alternative to shelves are small wooden boxes that you place upside down without a lid. This way, the rodent can still live in them. It is important that the wood is untreated. In this context, please also take a look at our rodent houses!
