Frequently asked questions about bowls & drinkers

This really depends on your pet's personal preferences. They are usually used to what they were brought up on in the pet shop or at the breeder immediately after adoption. However, it is of course possible for you to reacclimatise your pet!
Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. Bowls can be spilt, drinking bottles cause difficulties for some rodent characters. Some simply don't like moving the little ball to get water. On the other hand, the drinking bowl is simply the closest thing to a natural drinking trough in the wild.
Cleaning is the same for both products. Germs can immediately colonise both the bowl and the bottle if they are not cleaned regularly.
Rodents with back problems definitely need a bowl as it supports their posture. Keep a close eye on your ageing pet. If it seems to you that it is struggling to drink from the bottle handle, try a bowl.
Initially, offer the animal both. Of course, it is quicker for the rodent to get used to the bowl rather than the bottle.
If he doesn't pay attention to the bottle for several days in a row or possibly doesn't understand how it works, proceed as follows:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Take your pet in your hand.
- Hold it in front of the handle of the drinking bottle so that it can see it.
- Carefully roll your finger over the bead so that water comes out.
- Hold your finger in front of his little snout.
- Now place the rodent directly in front of the drinking bottle.
As the drinking bottle is made of plastic, it should not be cleaned in the dishwasher. It is better to wash them out once a week with hot water.
It is best to have a spare bottle ready so that the bottle can dry in peace afterwards.
It is best to change the water in the drinking bottle once a day. From a health point of view, there's nothing wrong with leaving it in the bottle for an extra day, but fresh water simply tastes better!
Replace the drinking bottle if it becomes contaminated and cannot be removed or if it starts to leak. This would cause the litter to become damp, which can damage the rodents' habitat. Moisture in the bedding may attract vermin.
Ideally, you should always have three bowls at home (a third in case one of the other two breaks), so you can change it whenever it gets dirty. If you find litter, sand or other things in the water, it is best to change it.
If you have a remarkably clean little one at home who does not bring any dirt into the water, change the bowl once a week. This will prevent algae formation and germs. This is because dirt that you cannot see with the naked eye is sometimes brought into the bowl. After all, rodents like to hold on to the rim when drinking.
