Buy species-appropriate hamster food
You will be surprised, it is not as easy as you think to buy species-appropriate hamster food in pet shops. Zoo Zajac is a major exception. In other pet shops you will usually find hamster food that contains lots of pea flakes, cereals and sugar, for example. Sugar in the form of dried fruit and vegetables, cereals in various forms. However, none of this is particularly good for a hamster, or even dangerous for a dwarf hamster. A species-appropriate hamster food should:
- contain a balanced proportion of oilseeds and meal-containing seeds, usually 30:70, i.e. 30% oilseeds and 70% meal-containing seeds
- contain animal protein from several sources
- contain no "fatteners" such as carrots, strawberries, pure wheat, an excessive number of flakes
- contain herbs and flowers
- be safe for dwarf hamster diabetes, i.e. contain no sugary or sugar-processing ingredients
The subject of nutrition is a very detailed one, so we have only briefly summarised what is important for you here. However, you can be sure that the food we offer is species-appropriate for your rodent. Following advice from Hamsterhilfe NRW, we have added a Getzoo dwarf hamster light food to our range for dwarf hamsters at risk of diabetes.
Species-appropriate food for coloured mice and gerbils
Coloured mice and gerbils should also be fed a varied diet. Mice are survival artists and will always find something to eat, but that doesn't mean that they will do better. Given the choice, mice will feed on seeds, herbs, flowers and animal protein in the form of worms, fish and other small insects. To meet this need, our colour mouse and gerbil food consists of 47 different, high-quality ingredients. Your mouse will certainly not get bored picking up the food and eating it with relish. The food has a balanced mixture of seeds, flowers, herbs, protein and delicious dried vegetable flakes. This ensures that your mice's vitamin balance is optimally covered and nothing stands in the way of a healthy life.
What makes us special is that we take great care to use local ingredients, which means that your coloured mice and gerbils get the grains and seeds, herbs and flowers that can also be found in their original habitat.
Supplementary food for rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas
The main food for rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas should of course always be fresh food. For these animals, greens are particularly important. Delicious cucumber, lettuce leaves, grasses and hay are the main ingredients in the diet of rabbits and co. However, you can do your rodents some good by feeding them something extra. The Getzoo herb garden is a kind of wellness cure for your pet. The ingredients are designed to supplement the diet and the valuable and gently dried herbs such as camomile, lemon balm, peppermint, lavender and nettle are particularly digestible and popular with rodents. It also contains flowers such as cornflower blossoms and marigolds, both of which are said to have positive effects.
So if you want to do something good for your rabbit, guinea pig or chinchilla or spoil them, why not give our Getzoo herb garden a try? This is also available in a big pack, in case your favourite rodents like it as much as we think they do.
